I was one of the users on minersneedcoolshoes, and I do miss some of the features on the old site, but I really like that it was recreated at least somewhat.
I like to make my skins in a barebones Minecraft style (or the style of the skin and overall textures used in the Minecraft Trailers), so I keep it simple but not too simple. For some of my skins I don't use this format, and don't be afraid to use my skins for your own or just to play the game.
